What “bioidentical” actually means
A bioidentical hormone has the exact molecular structure of the hormone your own body makes. Because the structure matches, the body recognizes and uses it the same way it uses its own hormones.
Body-identical vs compounded
Importantly, many regulated, well-studied, FDA-approved hormone products are body-identical — they are not the same as custom “compounded bioidentical” preparations mixed at a pharmacy, which are not held to the same testing and consistency standards. The marketing often blurs this line; the difference matters.
How they compare to older synthetic types
Some older hormone formulations use molecules that differ slightly from the body’s own. These have their place, but for many women, body-identical estrogen (especially through the skin) and micronized progesterone are preferred for their favorable balance of benefits and risks.
Which is safer?
“Bioidentical” is not automatically safer, and “synthetic” is not automatically dangerous. Safety depends on the specific hormone, the dose, the route of delivery, and your individual history — not on the label alone.
