Finding a vulvovaginal specialist in Maryland who takes these concerns seriously — and has the passion to investigate them properly — can be surprisingly difficult. Vulvar and vaginal problems are common, often persistent, and frequently under-treated. Dr. Enzmann provides focused, in-person care for women dealing with recurrent or stubborn vulvovaginal conditions, combining gynecology with an understanding of the vaginal microbiome, and sometimes using her functional medicine armamentarium to dig deeper.
Conditions Dr. Enzmann cares for
This includes recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV), recurrent yeast infections, genitourinary syndrome of menopause (vaginal dryness, irritation, and painful intercourse), lichen sclerosus and other vulvar skin conditions, and vulvodynia (persistent vulvar pain). Many women arrive after months or years of repeated short courses of treatment that never resolved the underlying problem.
The vaginal microbiome, and why it matters
A healthy vagina is dominated by protective lactobacillus bacteria that keep the environment slightly acidic and resistant to infection. When that balance is disrupted — by hormonal change, antibiotics, or other factors — less helpful organisms take over, leading to the recurrent infections and irritation many women struggle with. Treating the balance, not just the latest flare, is what breaks the cycle.
Why these problems are so often under-treated
Vulvovaginal symptoms are easy to dismiss and uncomfortable to raise, and a brief appointment rarely allows for the careful examination and history these conditions need. The result is repeated treatment of symptoms without addressing the cause — and understandable frustration.
The menopause connection
After menopause, falling estrogen thins and dries vaginal tissue, raising the pH and making infection, irritation, and discomfort more likely. This is genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and it is both common and very treatable — often with approaches that differ from those used in younger women.
What to expect at a visit
Because these conditions require a proper examination, this care is provided in person at the Glen Burnie office. A visit includes time to take a full history, examine carefully, and — where helpful — test the vaginal environment, so that treatment addresses the underlying cause rather than the latest episode.
